Murcia hamburger takes the title as Best Artisan Burger in Spain

Showcasing the quality and freshness of produce available in the Region, a supermarket in Murcia has beaten off stiff competition in Madrid this week to have its meat patty crowned the Best Artisan Burger in all of Spain.

‘La Más Murciana’ is made up of mouthwatering Murcian Chato pork, goat cheese with calasparra pepper and cucumber, and is the brainchild of Francisco Javier Caballero, head butcher at the Súper Cresta supermarket in Los Garres, Murcia.

He battled it out with top butchers from Galicia, Aragon and Catalonia in the final of the nationwide hamburger contest organised by Educarne, but finally the humble Murcia-grown sandwich took the top prize.

Súper Cresta has been selling superb quality meat in the Los Garres district for more than 30 years, the last 10 under the management of Lorenzo Carrillo.

Fighting for the accolade of Best Artisan Burger “has not been easy”, he explained, “because we have competed against great butchers from all over Spain."

The key to the success of La Más Murciana, according to Caballero, is the fact that the competitors “brought the best ingredients from the Region of Murcia to Madrid”.

“We wanted to make it known that the Region of Murcia has very good products and the best professional butchers,” he added.

On the back of this huge success, the master craftsman made “a plea in favour of butcher shops”, asking customers to buy meat from their local stores, which make up a very important link in the food chain.
